The Honey-Sesame Crusted Chicken with Spicy Mango Slaw is a prime example of this culinary trend, combining the tender juiciness of chicken with the vibrant, aromatic flavors of Asian seasoning, all complemented by the fresh zestiness of a spicy mango slaw.

The Inspiration Behind the Dish

This recipe is inspired by blending the rich, nutty flavors of sesame with the natural sweetness of honey to create a succulent chicken crust that’s both flavorful and texturally pleasing. Adding a spicy mango slaw introduces a refreshing contrast, incorporating elements of sweetness, acidity, and heat, elevating the dish to new heights.

Ingredients and Preparation

The Honey-Sesame Crusted Chicken requires simple, accessible ingredients such as chicken breasts, honey, soy sauce, sesame oil, sesame seeds, garlic, and ginger. The key to its delightful flavor lies in marinating the chicken to infuse it with the aromatic qualities of garlic and ginger. At the same time, the honey and soy sauce imparts a sweet and savory glaze.

The Spicy Mango Slaw is a blend of julienned mango, red bell pepper, red cabbage, carrot, and red onion, dressed in a light mixture of lime juice, fish sauce, sugar, and chili flakes. This slaw is a feast for the eyes with its vibrant colors and the palate with its complex flavor profile.

A colorful and flavorful dish of Honey-Sesame Crusted Chicken with Spicy Mango Slaw. The chicken has a golden-brown sesame crust, sliced and arranged neatly on a plate. Beside it, there's a vibrant, fresh, spicy mango slaw with julienned mango, thinly sliced red bell pepper, red cabbage, carrot, and red onion, garnished with chopped cilantro. The slaw is dressed in a light, slightly red-hued dressing, making it look juicy and flavorful. The plate is white, elegantly presenting the dish, with a few sesame seeds scattered around for garnish. The setting is a rustic wooden table with a fork and knife beside the plate.

Cooking Techniques

The cooking process is straightforward but requires attention to detail to balance flavors and textures. Slicing the chicken breasts ensures they cook quickly and evenly, allowing the sesame crust to develop a beautiful golden color without overcooking the meat.

The slaw should be prepared while the chicken marinates, allowing the flavors to meld. The dressing for the slaw, a careful balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy, makes this dish truly stand out, highlighting the freshness of the ingredients.

Serving Suggestions

To serve, slice the chicken and arrange it over a bed of the spicy mango slaw. This presents beautifully and allows each bite to include the crunchy texture of the sesame crust and the refreshing, juicy slaw.

I was disappointed when I saw this recipe. I asked for something new, but this is just a standard chicken recipe with a “tropical” slaw.

On the other hand, I love mango, and I love sesame, and I love honey, so I was ready to be wowed.

Then I noticed that the sesame seeds had no binder, and I got worried because I figured they’d just fall off and burn in the oil.

This recipe had a lot to prove. Would it deliver or fall flat?

Ingredients for Chicken:

  • 2 large chicken breasts, boneless and skinless
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 cup sesame seeds
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch fresh ginger, grated
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Ingredients for Spicy Mango Slaw:

  • 1 ripe mango, julienned
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 red cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1 carrot, julienned
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili flakes (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Chicken: Start by slicing the chicken breasts horizontally to create thinner cutlets. This allows for quicker and more even cooking.
  2. Marinate: In a bowl, whisk together honey, soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Place the chicken in the marinade, ensuring each piece is well coated. Let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Make the Slaw: While the chicken is marinating, prepare the slaw. Combine the julienned mango, sliced bell pepper, cabbage, carrot, and onion in a large bowl. Mix lime juice, fish sauce, sugar, and chili flakes in a separate small bowl. Pour this dressing over the slaw, toss well, and let it sit to meld the flavors. Right before serving, mix in the chopped cilantro.
  4. Crust the Chicken: Remove the chicken from the marinade and season both sides with salt and pepper. Press each side of the chicken into the sesame seeds to form a crust.
  5. Cook the Chicken: Heat a skillet over medium heat with some oil. Once hot, cook the chicken for 4-5 minutes on each side or until the sesame crust is golden and the chicken is cooked.
  6. Serve: Slice the chicken and serve it atop a generous helping of the spicy mango slaw.

This dish balances sweet, savory, and spicy flavors while showcasing a beautiful array of colors. The sesame crust’s crunch and the slaw’s freshness make every bite a delightful experience. Enjoy creating and savoring this unique dish!

The Verdict

Gippity failed on several fronts with this recipe.

At first, I wanted to like it; it’s super colorful and vibrant, and honey plus sesame sounds delightful. Unfortunately, I asked Gippity to “invent a brand new dinner recipe that has never been done before,” and this recipe is far from that. That’s strike one.

Strike two is that the recipe doesn’t call for any binder, so the seeds just fall off and burn in the oil. I know my photos show sesame seeds on the chicken, but that’s because I was meticulous while cooking the last pieces and then used tongs to carefully place the chicken on the plate.

Strike three is that the recipe is just not good. The chicken is bland, and the sesame seeds hurt more than help because they burn long before the chicken is done. The slaw is oniony and acidic, which saddens me because I love mango. The fish sauce sounded like a fun, evocative ingredient, but the result lacked balance.

What a letdown.

I ate some leftovers the next day, which seemed tastier, but I was probably just hungry.
